Why Is My Car Pulling to One Side?

By Sun Garage, Owner, Sun Garage · 18 June 2026 · 5 min read

Pulling to one side is a safety issue

If your car pulls to the left or right when you drive straight, it is telling you something is wrong. It might be something simple like tyre pressure, but it could also be alignment, braking, or suspension problems.

At Sun Garage in West Bromwich, we diagnose pulling quickly and get your car running straight again.

The most common causes

Most pulling problems have a straightforward cause. We check them in this order:

Uneven tyre pressure

This is the single most common cause. If one side of the car has lower tyre pressure, that side will roll less freely and the car will pull toward it.

The fix is simple: check all four tyre pressures and set them to the specification found on your door jamb or in the handbook. Pressures should be checked cold (before you have driven and the tyres have warmed up).

Worn or uneven tyres

If one tyre is significantly more worn than the others, or if you have a bulge or flat spot on one side, it will cause pulling. Uneven wear also suggests an alignment problem that needs addressing.

Wheel alignment out

If your car is pulling even after tyre pressures are correct, the wheels may be out of alignment. This happens after hitting a pothole, bumping a kerb, or from normal wear and tear.

Misaligned wheels not only pull the car to one side — they also wear tyres unevenly and increase fuel consumption.

Brake drag

If one brake caliper is sticking or not releasing fully, that side of the car will be pulled. This is usually worse when you brake, but can also cause pulling during normal driving.

Seized calipers also cause overheating and can be dangerous.

Suspension or steering problems

Worn ball joints, tie-rods, or suspension components can cause pulling and also affect handling and safety.

How we diagnose and fix it

We will check tyre pressures and condition first — the simplest issue is usually the right one. Then we inspect the brakes, suspension, and steering before checking alignment on our laser alignment rig.

We give you a clear picture of what needs fixing and quote before any work starts.

  • Tyre pressures and condition checked
  • Brake pads, discs, and caliper operation inspected
  • Suspension arms and joints examined
  • Steering components tested
  • Wheel alignment measured and adjusted if needed

Do not ignore pulling

A car that pulls to one side is not safe, and it is also a sign that something is wearing prematurely. A small alignment issue becomes a big expense if tyres and suspension components wear out faster than they should.
