Why Is My Car Air Con Not Cold?

A cold cabin shouldn't be a lottery

Every year we see the same thing at Sun Garage: the weather warms up and suddenly half of West Bromwich is driving around with the windows down because the air con has stopped doing its job. It's one of the most common complaints we hear in spring and early summer.

The good news is that a weak or warm air con system is almost always fixable, and usually for a fraction of what people assume. Understanding why it happens helps you catch problems early rather than suffering through a hot commute.

The number one cause: refrigerant loss

Unlike your fuel tank, your air con system is meant to be sealed for life. It shouldn't need topping up. But every system loses a small amount of refrigerant gas naturally over time through microscopic gaps in hoses, seals and joints — typically around 10-15% a year.

Lose enough gas and the system can't build the pressure needed to cool the air properly. This is why a car that was ice-cold last summer can feel lukewarm this year, even though nothing has obviously broken.

Warning signs worth acting on

You don't need to wait until it's a hot afternoon and the air con is completely warm to get it looked at. A few early signs are worth acting on straight away.

Signs your air con needs attention:

• Air is cool but not properly cold, especially at low speed or idle
• Cooling takes much longer than it used to
• A musty smell when the air con first switches on – often a sign of a dirty cabin filter or evaporator
• Unusual noises when the air con is switched on
• The air con only works intermittently

Left unchecked, a small refrigerant leak can eventually starve the compressor of the lubricant carried in the gas, leading to a much more expensive compressor replacement.
