Cooling system: the number one summer failure

Your engine works hardest to stay cool in hot weather, especially in stop-start traffic or on a motorway run with the air con on. A cooling system that was borderline all winter often tips over into overheating once temperatures rise.

Coolant level, condition and hose integrity are quick things to check but are the difference between a normal drive and a roadside breakdown with steam pouring from the bonnet.

Tyres take more punishment in the heat

Hot tarmac and fully loaded cars (think roof boxes, luggage, extra passengers) put more stress on tyres than most drivers realise. Under-inflated tyres flex more, generate more heat, and are at greater risk of a blowout on a long motorway journey.

Battery, fluids and the parts people forget

A car battery actually has a harder time in extreme heat than in the cold – high temperatures accelerate the chemical reactions inside that wear it out. A battery that's already a few years old can fail without warning on a hot day.

It's worth running through the less obvious checks too before a longer summer trip.

Quick pre-trip checks worth five minutes:

• Oil level and condition – low oil makes the engine work harder and run hotter
• Screen wash – top up and use a proper solution to clear bug splatter and glare
• Wiper blades – perished rubber smears in sudden summer showers

• Battery terminals – clean and free of corrosion

None of these take long individually, but together they cover most of what actually strands drivers on a hot day.
