What a turbocharger actually does
A turbocharger uses exhaust gas to spin a turbine, forcing extra compressed air into the engine so it can burn more fuel and produce more power from a smaller unit. It is a precision part, spinning at speeds well over 100,000rpm, and it relies on a constant supply of clean engine oil for lubrication and cooling.
Most modern diesels and an increasing number of petrol engines are turbocharged, which means a failing turbo is one of the more common (and more expensive) faults we see at Sun Garage in West Bromwich. Catching it early usually means a cheaper repair.
The warning signs you shouldn't ignore

Common signs of a failing turbo:

Foreign object damage
A damaged air filter or split intake hose can let debris reach the spinning turbine blades. Even small nicks unbalance the turbine and cause it to fail quickly, often with a sudden loss of power.
Wear and age
Like any part that spins at extreme speed, turbos wear out over time. High mileage vehicles, or those that have covered lots of short journeys without a proper warm-up and cool-down, tend to see turbos fail earlier.
Driving with a failing turbo
It can be tempting to keep driving while a turbo is only mildly noisy, especially if the car still feels driveable. This is a false economy. A failing turbo can send metal debris or excess oil into the engine's intake, and in the worst cases this leads to expensive engine damage well beyond the cost of the turbo itself.
If you notice whining, smoke, or a sudden drop in power, get your car checked promptly. Continuing to drive on a failing turbo risks turning a turbo repair into a full engine rebuild.
