Why oil changes matter more than people think
Engine oil lubricates moving parts, carries away heat, and keeps microscopic debris suspended so it doesn't damage internal components. Over time and mileage, oil breaks down chemically and loses its ability to protect the engine, even if the level still looks fine on the dipstick.
An oil change is the single cheapest way to protect an expensive engine, which is why it's the most common service item we carry out at Sun Garage in West Bromwich.
The general rule of thumb
Most modern cars need an oil change every 12 months or 10,000-12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Some manufacturers' longer service intervals stretch to two years or 18,000-20,000 miles, particularly with fully synthetic oil, but that assumes gentle, mostly motorway driving conditions.
Your handbook or service schedule will state the manufacturer's recommended interval for your specific car. When in doubt, we can check this for you against your registration.
Manufacturer intervals assume 'normal' driving conditions. Short journeys, stop-start traffic, towing, or very cold weather are all classed as severe driving, and mean oil should be changed more often than the standard schedule suggests.
Why your driving style changes the answer
The manufacturer's stated interval is a best-case figure. Real-world driving in West Bromwich, Oldbury and the surrounding areas is often exactly the kind of driving that shortens oil life.
Short journeys
An engine needs to reach full operating temperature to burn off condensation and fuel residue that build up in the oil. Frequent short trips under a few miles mean the engine rarely gets there, and oil degrades faster as a result.

Idling and crawling in traffic puts more heat and wear stress into the oil per mile driven than steady motorway cruising, even though the mileage adds up more slowly.
Towing or heavy loads
Extra load makes the engine work harder and run hotter, breaking down oil more quickly than under normal conditions.
Signs your oil needs changing sooner
Alongside the calendar and mileage, a few signs suggest your oil needs attention regardless of when it's officially due.
Watch out for:
- An oil change or service warning light on the dashboard
- Oil that looks very dark and gritty on the dipstick rather than amber and clear
- A ticking or knocking noise from the engine, especially on start-up
- Oil level dropping noticeably between checks
- A burning smell, which can indicate an oil leak onto a hot engine component
None of these should be ignored, and a ticking noise in particular is worth getting checked straight away rather than waiting for your next scheduled service.
Does oil type make a difference?
Fully synthetic oil is more chemically stable than semi-synthetic or mineral oil, and generally supports longer intervals between changes. However, using the correct grade and specification for your engine matters more than simply choosing the most expensive oil on the shelf.
We always use oil that meets your manufacturer's specification, since the wrong oil can affect everything from fuel economy to emissions equipment like the diesel particulate filter.
